The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is an upcoming American superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man, directed by Marc Webb and released by Columbia Pictures. It is a sequel to the 2012 film The Amazing Spider-Man and was announced in 2011. The studio hired James Vanderbilt to write the screenplay and Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to re-write it.[2][3] Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, Paul Giamatti, Denis Leary, Colm Feore, Chris Cooper, Sally Field, Chris Zylka, Marton Csokas, and Felicity Jones are set to star.

Development of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 began after the success of The Amazing Spider-Man. DeHann, Giamatti, Jones, and Cooper were cast between December 2012 and February 2013. Filming took place in New York from February to June 2013. The film is scheduled to be released in 2D and 3D on May 2, 2014.

Cast

Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker / Spider-Man: An orphaned teenage boy who received amazing spider-powers after being bitten by a genetically altered spider. Peter first uses his powers to hunt down the killer of his uncle in The Amazing Spider-Man but soon decides to use his powers to fight crime as the vigilante known as Spider-Man. Garfield explained that the suit that he will wear in the film will be undergoing a new design. Garfield hopes to bring back the theme of him being an orphan stating, "I wanna keep exploring that theme of being fatherless, being motherless, searching for purpose and finding a purpose within himself". He felt that it was a responsibility to take on the role and that he does not take it lightly.[6]
Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy: A high school student and Peter's love interest.
Jamie Foxx as Max Dillon / Electro: An electrical engineer who works for Oscorp Industries. Foxx described the character as "a nobody" who initially idolizes Spider-Man.[7] He develops an obsession with Spider-Man after being saved by him and obtains his powers through an accident at Oscorp involving electric eels.[8]
Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn: An old friend of Peter and son of Norman Osborn.[9] He was sent away to boarding school around the same time Peter's parents disappeared, and meets him for the first time since then in the film.[10]
Paul Giamatti as Aleksei Sytsevich / The Rhino: Giamatti explained that his character has a particular kind of suit. "He’s a Russian mobster. Russians are always good villains. I have an ability to just destroy things,” he said. “My accent is pretty hammy. I loved doing it. it seemed to me like an opportunity to be as over-the-top hammy as possible. It was really fun.
Sally Field as May Parker: Peter's aunt.

Martin Sheen as Ben Parker: Peter's uncle who was murdered by a thief in the first film.
Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn: The president of Oscorp and Harry Osborn's father.
Marton Csokas as Dr. Kafka: the head of Ravencroft Institute.
    Chris Zylka as Flash Thompson
Denis Leary as Captain George Stacy: Gwen's father who was murdered by the Lizard in the first film.

Colm Feore,[13] Felicity Jones,[11] and B. J. Novak[19] have also been cast in unspecified roles. According to Jones, and later clarified by Marc Webb, her character is in a "special relationship" with Norman Osborn.[1][20][21] Sarah Gadon has been cast as an artificial intelligence officer.[22] Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee will once again have a cameo appearance as a graduation guest

Development
Producer Matt Tolmach stated that there "will be more than one [sequel] and at the very least three."[24] The first sequel is set for release on May 2, 2014.[25] The sequel's villain was teased in the 2012 film.[26] Webb stated that the origin story would further unfold in the second installment.[27] In June 2012, Webb said he was unsure whether he would return,[28] though it was confirmed on September 28, 2012, that he would return to direct the sequel.[29][30] He claimed he "wanted to create a universe that not only can withstand but anticipate future storylines" while also "working in and of itself for one movie."[31] Andrew Garfield had also expressed hope to reprise his role,[32] and in September 2012, it was confirmed that he would do so.[29][30] Emma Stone was later confirmed to be reprising her role as Gwen Stacy, having signed a contract for two Amazing Spider-Man sequels. The original costume and mask from The Amazing Spider-Man will be altered and will have a lens in the mask, making the eyes bigger. The web shooters have also been modified.[33]

Actor J. K. Simmons expresses his interest in reprising his role as J. Jonah Jameson from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy if the studio offers it to him.[34] Electro was announced as the next villain,[35] with Jamie Foxx being offered the role.[36][37][38] Foxx later confirmed that he was cast as the character and during an interview with MTV, he explained that the redesign of the character will be more grounded along with details of his depiction.[39] On December 3, 2012, Marc Webb revealed that Dane DeHaan was chosen to play Harry Osborn. In addition, according to Webb, it is confirmed that actor Martin Sheen will return as Ben Parker in the film, but with not yet any confirmed role to make. Paul Giamatti was also confirmed to play the Rhino on February 5, 2013, and Felicity Jones has confirmed her involvement with the movie under an undisclosed role.[40] On February 27, 2013, Chris Cooper was cast as Norman Osborn.

Mary Jane Watson
On October 10, 2012, it was announced that Shailene Woodley was offered the role of Mary Jane Watson.[41][42] Mary Jane was confirmed as a small role in the film when on March 14, 2013, it was confirmed that Shailene Woodley had concluded filming her scenes.[43] On June 19, 2013, it was announced that Mary Jane was cut from the film. Director Marc Webb told The Hollywood Reporter that the cut was "a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship" and that everyone loved working with Woodley.

Filming
On February 4, 2013, Marc Webb posted on his Twitter account that principal photography had begun. He also confirmed that the sequel is being shot on 35mm film in the anamorphic format, instead of being filmed digitally as the preceding film was.[45] Sony revealed this would be the first Spider-Man film to be filmed entirely in New York,[46] and the largest film production ever in New York City.[47] Its decision of when and where it filmed caused controversy in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, due to filming near the Passover which they believe will cause problems with parking.[48] The filming company decided to work with the community and then has agreed to adjust its production activities for the Passover.[49][50] Set photos indicate that the State University of New York Maritime College is being used to represent the Ravencroft Institute in the movie.[51] Rochester is being used to film a car chase scene, because the speed laws are less restrictive in upstate New York.

Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield have been seen wearing graduation uniforms, suggesting they will be graduating. On June 2, 2013, set photos revealed that Denis Leary would reprise his role as Captain George Stacy.

On June 25, Webb revealed that the filming was wrapped up in his Twitter account.

The franchise superhero's next nemesis has three films at Toronto and a soaring career path that includes zombie comedy "Life After Beth" and West Memphis Three drama "Devil's Knot."

What a difference a year makes. After turning heads in the 2012 Toronto triptych The Place Beyond the Pines, Dane DeHaan returns to the festival with the concert-narrative mashup Metallica Through the Never, drama Kill Your Darlings and West Memphis Three saga Devil's Knot. Likened to an edgier Leonardo DiCaprio, he gained notice as a tortured gay teen in HBO's In Treatment, and after co-starring in the found-footage hit Chronicle in 2012, he landed Harry Osborn in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, due in May. Lest he be typecast as moody, DeHaan has the zombie comedy Life After Beth in 2014.
