Gravity is a 2013 3D space thriller film[2][3] co-written, co-produced, co-edited and directed by Alfonso Cuarón. The film stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as surviving astronauts from a damaged Space Shuttle.
Cuarón wrote the screenplay with his son Jonás and attempted to develop the project at Universal Studios. After the rights to the project were sold, the project found traction at Warner Bros. instead. The studio approached multiple actresses before casting Bullock in the female lead role. Robert Downey, Jr. was also involved as the male lead before leaving the project and being replaced by Clooney.
Gravity opened at the 70th Venice International Film Festival in August 2013.[4] Its North American premiere was three days later at the Telluride Film Festival. It got a wide release in the United States and Canada on October 4, 2013, and in the Philippines on October 3, 2013.
Production[edit]
The project was in development at Universal Pictures for several years, but the studio placed it in turnaround. Warner Bros. acquired the project, which in February 2010, attracted the attention of Angelina Jolie, who had rejected a sequel to Wanted.[5] Later in the month, she passed on the project,[6] partially because the studio did not want to pay her $20 million fee,[7] which she had received for her latest two movies. She received $19 million for The Tourist[8] and over $20 million for Salt. She also passed on the project because she wanted to work on directing her Bosnian war film, In the Land of Blood and Honey.[9] In March, Robert Downey, Jr. entered talks to be cast in the male lead role.
Casting[edit]
In mid-2010, Marion Cotillard tested for the female lead role. By August 2010, Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively were in the running for the role.[7] In September, Cuarón received approval from Warner Bros. to offer the role without a screen test to Natalie Portman who was being praised for her recently released film Black Swan.[11] Portman passed on the project due to scheduling conflicts, and Warner Bros. then approached Sandra Bullock for the role.[9] In November 2010, Downey left the project to star in How to Talk to Girls, a project in development with Shawn Levy attached to direct.[12] In the following December, with Bullock signed for the co-lead role, George Clooney replaced Downey.
Filming[edit]
Gravity has a production budget of $80 million and was filmed digitally. Live elements were shot at Pinewood and Shepperton Studios in the UK[14] with the visual effects supervised by Tim Webber at Framestore in London.[15] The 3D was designed and supervised by Chris Parks. The majority of the 3D was created through stereo rendering the CG at Framestore with the rest post converted, principally at Prime Focus, London with additional conversion work by Framestore. Prime Focus's supervisor was Richard Baker. Filming began in London in May 2011.[16] Although the first trailer has audible explosions in it, Cuarón has confirmed that scenes in space will be silent: "They put in explosions [in the trailer]. As we know, there is no sound in space. In the film, we don't do that.
Storyline
Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone--tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth...and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

Diane Kruger (born Diane Heidkrüger; 15 July 1976) is a German actress and former fashion model. She is known for roles such as Helen in Troy, Dr. Abigail Chase in National Treasure and its sequel, Bridget von Hammersmark in Inglourious Basterds, Anna in Mr. Nobody, and Gina in Unknown.
Early life She was born as Diane Heidkrüger in Algermissen, West Germany, near Hildesheim, the daughter of computer specialist Hans-Heinrich Heidkrüger, and his wife, Maria-Theresa, a bank employee.[2] She was raised Roman Catholic[3] and attended Catholic school. She has stated that one of her grandmothers was Polish. She was raised in Germany with her younger brother, Stefan. Her mother sent her to student exchange programs when she was a teenager to improve her English. As a child, Kruger wanted to become a ballerina and successfully auditioned for the Royal Ballet School in London. However, after an injury ended her ballet career prematurely, Kruger moved to Paris and turned her energy toward modeling and learning French.
Modeling
In 1992, Kruger represented Germany in the Elite Model Look[8] and started modeling afterwards. Despite her relatively small frame for a model, she managed to add prestigious bookings such as advertisements from Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Salvatore Ferragamo, Giorgio Armani, Jil Sander, Christian Dior, Burberry, and Louis Vuitton; runway shows from Marc Jacobs, D&G, and Sonia Rykiel as well as appearances on the cover of Vogue Paris, Marie Claire and Cosmopolitan to her modeling repertoire.[1] She gradually stopped modeling after deciding to pursue a career in acting.
Acting career
Kruger soon became interested in acting and took lessons at the Cours Florent. She landed some small appearances in several French films. She made her onscreen debut in 2002, opposite Dennis Hopper and Christopher Lambert in The Piano Player, a TV-movie by Jean-Pierre Roux. Her first major role was the same year when she starred in her then husband's directorial debut Mon Idole.
She played Julie Wood in 2003's Michel Valliant and Lisa in Wicker Park (2004), alongside Josh Hartnett and Rose Byrne. One of her more high-profile roles to date is her portrayal of Helen of Sparta in Wolfgang Petersen's epic Troy. She was ranked 50th on the Maxim Hot 100 Women of 2005.[9] In 2004, Kruger starred with Nicolas Cage and Sean Bean (who co-starred with her in Troy) in the film National Treasure, going on to appear in movies Joyeux Noël (2005) and Copying Beethoven (2006). She reprised her role as Dr. Abigail Chase in National Treasure: Book of Secrets, released in December 2007.
Kruger was the hostess of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.
Kruger was a jury member of the 58th Berlin International Film Festival in 2008. The festival is chaired by Costa Gavras.
In 2009, she co-starred as a German actress turned Allied spy in Quentin Tarantino's film Inglourious Basterds. Kruger starred in 2011 in the Liam Neeson film Unknown alongside January Jones.
In December 2009, she announced the nominations of the 67th Golden Globe Awards and also picked up nominations from the Screen Actors Guild for Best Supporting Actress and Outstanding Performance by a Cast of a Motion Picture for her role in Inglourious Basterds.
Kruger played Anna in Jaco Van Dormael's Mr. Nobody. Critical response has praised the film's artistry and Kruger's acting.
Kruger made a cameo appearance in an April 2010 episode of the Fox show Fringe, in which her boyfriend, actor Joshua Jackson is a star. In 2010, Kruger also appeared in Mark Ronson's music video for "Somebody to Love Me", where she plays Boy George. In 2011, it was announced that she had replaced Eva Green in the role of Marie Antoinette in the French-language film, Les Adieux à la Reine.
In 2012, she was named as a member of the Jury for the Main Competition at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.[15] She starred in the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's novel The Host, which was released in March, 2013.

Runner, Runner is a 2013 American crime drama thriller film directed by Brad Furman, and written by Brian Koppelman and David Levien. The film stars Justin Timberlake, Gemma Arterton and Ben Affleck, and was produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Davisson Killoran, Michael Shamberg, and Stacey Sher.[3] It was released in Belgium, France and the Philippines on September 25, 2013, and in several other countries the following days. It is scheduled to be released in the United States on October 4, 2013.
While the conversation around the career rebound of Matthew McConaughey will continue this fall with "Dallas Buyers Club," many forget that it was 2011's "The Lincoln Lawyer" that gave the actor the first spring in his comeback step. On paper, it was a rather routine procedural, but it was elevated by director Brad Furman who shot it with some style and energy, and of course, McConaughey made his character leap off the page in the way few actors could. Which brings us to "Runner Runner," a movie that once again pairs Furman with a rather standard script, and though he does his best again to inject the proceedings with some spark and aided by a strong performance from a veteran actor, it doesn't quite graduate to the level of enjoyable pulp.
Justin Timberlake leads the picture as the (ironically?) named Richie Furst, a less cocky version of his Sean Parker from "The Social Network." Highly educated, smart as a whip, and also butting heads with authority figures, Richie is facing expulsion from Princeton for soliciting professors and students to join an online gambling site. It's a gig that earns him enough commissions to keep up with his tuition payments, but forced to give it up, he suddenly finds himself without a way to earn the $60,000 he needs to stay in school. The solution? Nope, he's not taking a loan. Instead, he risks the $17,000 or so he has in the bank and go all in with a marathon session of online poker. The result? On the brink of winning what he needs, he gets hustled by the gaming site, and does what anyone would do on the brink of going broke: flies to Costa Rica in a longshot bid to try and confront the head honcho of the site to let him know that he knows the setup is rigged.
Don't overthink it too much, and just go with it, because there will be more logic leaps you'll have to accept as the movie goes on. Anyway, the man at the top of Midnight Black is on Ivan Block (Ben Affleck), an ex-pat American whose legally grey operations keep him exiled and homesick from his native land, and his beloved Pittsburgh. Initially, Ivan brushes off Richie, but in the cold light of morning, he realizes the kid may be an asset, so not only does he offer him the money he lost in full, but a six-figure income job working for Midnight Black. Sitting on Ivan's yacht and already tasting a bit of the good life, Richie accepts. But it isn't long until he finds out that Ivan is hiding some shady secrets, and pressed between a bullheaded, scheming FBI agent (Anthony Mackie) eager to take down the online kingpin, and the increasing instability of his boss, Richie will have do some maneuvering to stay alive and out of jail.
The film was written by Brian Koppelman and David Levien, who certainly know their way around this world, having penned "Rounders" and the "Ocean's Thirteen." But "Runner Runner" is less about gambling (though there is a fair amount of jargon, particularly early on) as it is mostly about a man with a great fortune, doing everything he can legal or illegal, to keep growing his empire. If Ivan Block were a real estate broker or drug dealer, the movie wouldn't change all that much, and that's part of the problem. "Runner Runner" feels like a movie you've seen a hundred times on cable, and hearkens back to numerous, thoroughly average, mid-budgeted dramatic thrillers of the mid-'90s that will fill programming slots on late night forever. If you watched this on a plane and fell asleep for twenty minutes, you'd wake up and still quickly figure out everything that's going on. Once Ivan Block's villainy is established, it's merely a waiting game to see how he'll get taken down.
So why did Ben Affleck take on a role in such an middle-of-the-road movie? Well, Ivan Block is easily the best, most well-written character of anyone in the film and Affleck really makes the most of it. He gets all of the best lines, and while the trailers have played up his most (out of context) histrionic moments, he actually chooses to underplay his bad guy for the most part, a smart approach for a role that could easily become a cartoon. Affleck fills in the shades of a character who is almost resentful of the isolation his success breeds, and whose business has almost become a perverse game of manipulating everyone who crosses his path. These notes are struck smoothly by Affleck, who still knows enough to realize he's in a B-movie, and lands on the right side of self-seriousness, while having a bit of fun too. And in his shadow, Timberlake's lead winds up being even more forgettable and thin, while Gemma Arterton's stock role of the girl who comes between the two guys is so cliche, it's like everyone gave up on making it remotely interesting.
As "Runner Runner" heads into its final act, the wheezing familiarity of the tropes and beats of this kind of movie start to become more tedious, as the plotting becomes muddier to the point where Timberlake spends a good amount of time running around handing out envelopes (seriously). As Ivan fades into background, and Richie comes to the fore, the film gets less and less interesting, until it all finishes rather anti-climatically, with a couple of sour one liners tossed in for good measure.
Half-heartedly making statements about the seductive allure of a life in paradise, the murky waters of legalized gambling, "Runner Runner" is content to stay high gloss, with no filler. Furman directs this with more flair that it probably rightfully deserves, capturing both the palatial environs of Ivan's business, the scummier, seedier parts of Costa Rica where the less than legal business goes down, with an eye for color. But unlike "The Lincoln Lawyer," it's not enough, even combined with a game turn from Affleck, to trick viewers into believing that the movie is more than a cinematic bluff.

Ender's Game is an upcoming American science fiction action film based on the novel of the same name by Orson Scott Card. Directed and written by Gavin Hood, the film will star Asa Butterfield as Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, an unusually gifted child who is sent to an advanced military school in space to prepare for a future alien invasion. The cast also includes Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Aramis Knight, Hailee Steinfeld, Jimmy Pinchak, Viola Davis, and Abigail Breslin.
The film will first be released in the United Kingdom and Ireland on October 25, followed by Australia on October 31, the United States of America and Canada on November 1, and many other countries from November throughout mid-January of 2014.
In the near future, a hostile alien race called the Formics have attacked Earth. If not for the legendary heroics of International Fleet Commander Mazer Rackham, all would have been lost. In preparation for the next attack, the highly esteemed Colonel Hyrum Graff and the International Military are training only the best young minds to find the future Mazer. Ender Wiggin, a shy but strategically brilliant boy, is recruited to join the elite. Arriving at Battle School, Ender quickly and easily masters increasingly difficult challenges and simulations, distinguishing himself and winning respect amongst his peers. Ender is soon ordained by Graff as the military's next great hope, resulting in his promotion to Command School. Once there, he's trained by Mazer Rackham himself to lead his fellow soldiers into an epic battle that will determine the future of Earth and save the human race.
Government drafts genius child Andrew "Ender" Wiggin to defend against alien Buggers, but rejects sadistic brother Peter and beloved sister Valentine. In orbiting Battle School, rigorous military training, skill and natural leadership elevates boy to isolated position, respected by jealous rivals, pressured by teachers, afraid of invasion.
Note: this post has some spoilers about Ender’s Game, so if you haven’t read it yet, don’t read this post. Just go out and buy it and read it, because it’s amazing. But don’t take my word for it; I mean, the 1986 Hugo Award and 1984 Nebula Award are hard to argue with. It’s not even that long of a book. You can probably finish it in a lazy summer afternoon at the cottage, if you put down your iPhone for long enough. You can buy it on Amazon right now for, like, seven bucks.
This weekend, I finished re-reading Ender’s Game for the first time since I originally read it ten years ago and was blown away by how well the author, Orson Scott Card, predicted the future from the early 80s.
I say the early 80s, but it could have been earlier. Card’s first version was published as a story in a science fiction magazine in 1977. He later fleshed this out to a full-fledged novel in 1985 (according to the copyright information in my copy of the book), and made some more minor changes in 1991.
And when I’m talking about how Card predicted the future, I’m not talking about Ender’s Desk (which is described exactly like an iPad) or even the Ansible, a device capable of near-instantaneous communication over vast distances (not that far off, really). I’m talking about how he predicted the rise of blogging and the influence social media can have over culture and politics.
While most of the plot of the book follows young Ender Wiggin, youngest of three children, as he goes to Battle School at the age of six to learn how to be the commander of a fleet to fight invading aliens, a sub-plot involves how his sociopathic, but brilliant, brother Peter, and more empathetic, but equally brilliant, sister Valentine, are left home on earth.
Under the leadership of Peter, the two of them start contributing to “forums” on the “nets” using pseudonyms, or characters:
“They began composing debates for their characters. Valentine would prepare an opening statement, and Peter would invent a throwaway name to answer her. His answer would be intelligent, and the debate would be lively, lots of clever invective and good political rhetoric. Valentine had a knack for alliteration that made her phrases memorable. Then they would enter the debate into the network, separated by a reasonable amount of time, as if they were actually making them up on the spot. Sometimes a few other netters would interpose comments, but Peter and Val would usually ignore them or change their own comments only slightly to accommodate what had been said.”
The next paragraph describes how Peter tracked how their work was being read and shared, and reads almost like a description of media monitoring in 2010.
As the two keep writing, their influence grows, their articles get syndicated, and they begin to get involved in serious policy discussions. Since its all online, no one knows that it is actually just two genius children.
Implausible? Yes. Impossible? No.
While I doubt that our global politics are being played like a game of chess by a couple of kids, I think Orson Scott Card’s prediction of the way an ordinary citizen can get involved via the internet and become a serious, real-world influence is a great bit of future-casting.
Reasons like that are why I love reading science-fiction, be it old-school Heinlein and Asimov, 80s cyberpunk, or the post-human stuff that’s all the rage these days. Science fiction is a framework for thinking about what could happen; it’s a way of looking forward to finding out who is going to be right.
Have you read Ender’s Game? Were Peter and Valentine the original bloggers?
